frequently asked questions

Q: Do I need my own hoop?
A: No! (But you may get hooked and want your own!)
RSVP for class and let me know if you'll need a hoop. If you are thinking of buying a hoop before class, keep in mind you will need something sturdier and heavier than a child's toy hoop. Check out my favorite local hoop maker, Elaine, at circlecandy.com

Q: How much?
A: Special rate: $10 suggested donation for the month of August. Not much more after that!

Q: I've never done Pilates. Can I still come?
A: Yes! No prior experience necessary. Class size is small so that I can help you with the exercises and give you modifications when needed. Already a Pilates super star? You will deepen your practice and I can give you modifications to intensify the workout if desired.

Q: Where do you meet?
A: Class takes place in Prospect Park, weather permitting. Each week hoopilatesnyc.com will be updated with our meet-up location and time. You can also sign up to receive e-mail reminders.
If you tweet, you can follow us on twitter: @hoopilatesnyc
The search is on for an indoor location for the fall and winter seasons. Stay tuned!

Q: What should I wear? Shoes or no shoes?
A: Anything you'd wear to the gym--some yoga pants, a tank top—whatever you feel comfortable in. Preferably something not too baggy.
Shoes on or off. Shoes off insures that you will be scrubbing your feet when you get home, but summer days are only as good as your feet are dirty.

Q: Do I need a mat?
A: Yes. A yoga mat is great, a beach towel will do just fine. We do some work seated and lying on the ground. We seek out the shade, but a bottle of water and sunscreen are a good idea too.

Q: I couldn't keep the hoop around my waist when I was a kid. Should I even bother?
A: Yes, come! You will surprise yourself. I surprised myself. We use larger, heavier hoops that will have you hooping in no time. Everyone new to class has kept the hoop around their waist by the end of their first session. You will too!
